Meet Your Madras Community Coordinator

In each community we work in, we hire someone from the local area to be our Community Coordinator. They’re our project team’s liaison with folks on the ground, someone who can raise public awareness and engagement with our project.

In Madras, we’re thrilled to announce that our Community Coordinator is school board member and volunteer extraordinaire, Jamie Hurd! Read on to learn a little bit more about Jamie, her heart for Madras, and what she’s got growing in her garden.

Give us a little introduction! Who are you, and what’s your connection to Madras?

For over ten years, my family and I have enjoyed living in Madras. I am a mother of three boys and married to my wonderful husband, Jeff. I enjoy supporting a variety of community projects and volunteering on the Jefferson County 509-J School Board. I am passionate about helping our youth become engaged community members and leaders that create opportunities for others.

What’s your favorite thing about Madras?

I enjoy the community of people within Madras. There are so many that are devoted to the betterment and growth of Madras in a positive direction. This community has helped to build many opportunities, public assets and support systems for Jefferson County residents.

How’d you get connected to this particular project?

I was connected to this project through my roles in a variety of community-wide programs. My volunteer work has helped me to build a variety of relationships and knowledge about Jefferson County. I also have a passion for the enhancement of education and opportunities for our students. My professional background is in natural resources, and I think that can provide an enhancement to our schoolyard development.

Why are you passionate about getting a Community Schoolyard built in Madras?

Outdoor space creates opportunities for our community members and students to move and generate positive experiences. When we can increase access and utilization this can lead to improved health for Jefferson County. I am excited to partner with our youth and community to create a space that is uniquely Madras.

Last but not least, what’s something that’s bringing you joy these days?

I get a lot of joy when I spend time outside. I love working in my garden where I can put my hands in good smelling soil, eat veggies fresh off the plant and watch wildlife that wanders into my garden. I also enjoy dropping into classrooms and sharing about wildlife to students.  t is fun to help students learn about some of the neat creatures in their own backyard!
