Chiloquin Elementary School

Our first rural community schoolyard project!

The Chiloquin Elementary Green Schoolyard Project was completed in August 2022.

This first rural community schoolyard project was a three-year effort that brought together local and regional partners to collaboratively build a new playspace for Chiloquin Elementary School and a park for the community to go to during non-school hours to equally benefit from the outdoor space.

The final schoolyard includes new play equipment, a mural by a local artist, a pole barn, and outdoor learning spaces with interpretive trails with signs in the Klamath language. And in a few months, seeds of native meadow grass and more than 30 trees will be planted to soak up the winter rains, provide shade, and create habitat for local wildlife.

Chiloquin sits at the confluence of the Sprague and Williamson Rivers and has long been a place of gathering for the Klamath Tribes. Through direct community engagement over the past years, we designed a Green Schoolyard that represents who Chiloquin is as a community. The Green Schoolyard carries forward this place’s importance as a space to come together, and ensure that our young people will have a safe space to continue to connect with their land and its rich history.
